case 5

Ok, ladies and gentlemen, this week is going to be a little different. This case that I am about to discuss only happened 11 days ago. It’s still fresh. And people are still hurting over it. So, I’m going to go ahead and ask that everyone be respectful and open to discussion. I’m not positing that anything untoward happened here, I’m simply pointing out some discrepancies that I have found with the case. That being said, in my humble opinion, there could definitely have been a different outcome on this case if one or two things had been handled differently. So, without further ado, let’s discuss the Kenneka Jenkins case.

19 year old Kenneka Jenkins went out to party with her friends on September 8, 2017, only to never be seen alive by her mother again. Kenneka and her friends went to a party at the Crowne Plaza Hotel a few miles outside of Chicago. What happened later that night is the material for a heated debate today.

Kenneka’s friends claim that before leaving the hotel, Kenneka realized she had left her phone in the hotel room where the party was being held and asked them to go retrieve it, informing them that she was going to stay in the lobby. When the friends returned, Kenneka was nowhere to be seen. After searching for a few hours, the friends called Kenneka’s mother, Tereasa, and informed her that they could not find her daughter. Tereasa drove to the hotel and asked the workers there if they could review the video footage in an attempt to help her find her missing child. The hotel denied her request, stating that there was nothing they could do until there was a missing person’s report from the police. Tereasa then called 911 and asked to have police intervention, to which the dispatcher advised her to check with Kenneka’s friends and wait until a later time to contact police again. Believing she had no other choice, Tereasa obliged. By the time the police got involved officially and came to the hotel to review the footage, it was the next day. Upon review of the footage from an abandoned part of the hotel that was under construction, Kenneka was discovered to have been walking down the hallway quite inebriated. (Video linked below) Following the lead given on the video, a hotel worker went to the last place Kenneka had been spotted by the cameras and made a disturbing discovery in the freezer. Kenneka Jenkins was inside. Dead.

Now, we don’t know much about evidence yet because the case is so fresh, so there isn’t a lot to go on that’s been released to the public. No cause of death has been released, nor has any blood test results. That being said, that has not stopped the massive amounts of public scrutiny and hype the case has received. Everyone has an opinion. And everyone claims to see things in both the security footage and a Facebook live video from the same night. But let’s be honest, most of that is just people with too much time on their hands wanting to cause a stir. Now, I don’t have a solid opinion on the case yet, but I do have quite a few things that I find to be a little suspicious. I’ll list them now.
1.       No 19 year old that I know is going to willingly A). wait alone in the lobby of a strange place B) . let someone else go get their phone for them or C). purposely walk away from said meet up place if by some odd occurrence they did do the two above things. So, to me, this makes the statement given by her friends highly suspicious.
2.       There is security video of Kenneka walking with her friends that was taken only a short while before the video of her alone, and in the former she appeared to be completely sober. In my experience, you do not get that drunk that quickly. I’d also like to point out that I have seen drunk people, and it looked like Kenneka had something else going on there, which leads me to believe that she might have been drugged.
3.       Which begs the question: if she was drugged, why didn’t someone follow her to act upon that vulnerability? And if they did somehow get past the cameras, why did they leave her in the freezer. In her state, she’d never have been able to make an ID.
4.       What took her friends so long to get back to the lobby and start searching for Kenneka?
5.       And finally, the car was Tereasa’s, and Kenneka knew she would need it to get back to her mother (who is suffering from breast cancer), so why would she give up the keys to someone in her friends group, who then left the hotel without her. It was stated that she didn’t drink much, so she’d have had no need to give the keys up.
Now, to me, these are just questions that I think should be answered. I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but the case is sketchy. Nonetheless, this child lost her life. And this mother lost her child. I only hope that one day there will be a clear answer as to what really happened.
Stay curious,
Dahlia
