A Legend Not Half as Terrifying as the Truth: Cropsey   A  legend terrifies an island of children Every state has its lore, and New York is no exception. This legend gets its origins from 1970’s Staten Island. Cropsey was his name, and he hunted children to make up for the son that he lost. The criminally insane killer stalked the woodlands and ruins of the Island. Descriptions of Cropsey differ, but most would agree that he was scarred or deformed in some way. A popular addition was a hook for a hand. A generation of children on Staten Island lived in fear of a monster of lore, while a very real monster stalked their streets. Innocent souls stolen by a very real boogeyman Alice Pereira 07/07/1972 5 years old Alice was last seen playing in the lobby of her apartment building with her brother around 3:30 p.m. on July  7 th . Was H.H. Holmes Jack the Ripper?

Heinous crimes, but two separate killers? H.H. Holmes. Jack the Ripper. Names that both true crime lovers and those less inclined to the true crime community recognize. But were they the same person? Historians have made a compelling case in recent years. But I’ll let you decide. H.H. Holmes Born Herman Mudgett on May 16, 1861 in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, H.H. was known to be an intelligent, if odd child. His affluent family was devoutly Christian, and his mother was often cold and uncaring towards him, while his father was an alcoholic who like to use physical discipline, isolation, starvation and other crueler forms of punishment on his children. There are stories of H.H. experimenting on small animals in his childhood, and some stories allege that he even killed another child when he was young. His experiments led him to an intense, often disturbing interest in anatomy and medicine. A killer is born H.H. attended the University of Michigan, where he studied m...

Axeman Demon or human monster? “They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether that surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the Axeman.” The Axeman of New Orleans. His name still strikes fear in the hearts of people in the Crescent City to this day. Who was this sadist? He claimed to be a “demon from the hottest hell,” but was he actually just a monster of the human variety? Everyone has a theory. But no one has an answer. No one except the Axeman himself.  From the late spring of 1918 to the mid-autumn of 1919, a murderer haunted the streets of New Orleans. During that time, the Axeman butchered a total of 13 victims. Young, old, men, women, the Axeman didn’t seem to care. And while all of his victims didn’t succumb to their injuries, the vast majority did.  The first victims to fall prey to the Ax...

Agatha Christie's Disappearance You might have heard of her. A woman ahead of her time. One of the greatest mystery writers the world has ever seen. But did you know that there’s a mystery behind the Queen of Mystery herself? In December 1926, the 36 year old Agatha disappeared from an English estate. Her car was later found not far from the estate. Inside the car were many of her belongings. Despite leaving a note saying she’d be taking a holiday, the circumstances seem odd. Due to the suddenness of it all and the state of the car, the police feared the worst. A manhunt was quickly commenced. And despite its size of nearly 16,000 people and it having divers and pilots alike involved, there was no sign of Agatha. Much the same way the theory of murder spread, so too did the list of suspects. The top suspect? Agatha’s husband, Archie. Archie was known to be unfaithful and often fought with his wife. To most, he seemed like the logical suspect. That is, until a we...

Hey guys. I'm dropping in to let you know that I'm going on an indefinite hiatus. I'm working on my next novel, moving houses, and trying to settle into my new role as wife and homemaker. And I honestly can't take anything else on my plate right now. I love blogging, but sadly, it's going to have to go to the back burner for the time being. I fully intend to come back eventually, but right now it's just not possible. I hope everyone is doing well, and I hope you guys will occasionally check back in. For now, goodbye. Thank you for the views. Stay curious, Dahlia
